Beginning Friday, April 19, 2013, 30 Cuesta College students will showcase their artistic abilities in the school’s annual spring art show, I Am An Artist. The show will be located in room 7170 near the campus’s Performing Arts Center and will open with a reception and award presentation that first Friday evening from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. The opening is a social event where parents, students, staff and community members can come together to support the students and celebrate their work.

On display will be 40 artworks featuring painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, and photography. One student will receive a $300 Best of Show award, sponsored by the Helen Novy endowment.   Other monetary awards are funded by the Associated Students of Cuesta College and student entry fees and include a $150 Best in Category award and a $75 Honorable Mention in Category award.

The annual student art show is juried by non-Cuesta College professionals. This year, the jurors were two San Luis Obispo-based artists and brothers, Jeff Jamieson and Dalton Jamieson. The art pieces must have been produced over the last two years but are not necessarily class projects.

“The exhibition is a chance for students to get the professional experience of entering a juried show,” said Fine Arts Division Chair Margaret Korisheli. “Juried competitions are a common way for emerging artists to build up a resume and show work. The exhibition gives students, Cuesta employees, and the community a chance to see the excellent work of our students.”

The show is open to students and the public Mondays through Fridays, 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. It will run through May 17, 2013.
