Let the weld-off begin!

On Saturday, March 30, 2013, from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., the Cuesta College Welding Technology Department’s fabrication team and the Paso Robles High School Skills Team will participate in a practice build for an upcoming SkillsUSA competition. The practice build will take place at the Farm Supply in Paso Robles, located at 2450 Ramada Drive. The teams will be building barbeques over a six-hour period.

In January 2013, both teams qualified in a regional competition and in April 2013, they will travel to San Diego to compete against 13 similar teams from around the state. In recent weeks, both local teams have fabricated their projects at schools and fabrication shops during the evenings and over weekends. On Saturday, the practice build at Farm Supply will remove the students from a shop environment and provide the challenge of onsite fabrication in a timed setting.

The contest in April will require the students to take a skills general-knowledge test followed by a welding general-knowledge test. They will be given a material list and concept design theme; this year the theme is a smoker or barbeque. They will be judged on their drawings, fabrication practices, teamwork and accuracy to their provided drawings.

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. On Saturday there will be school staff on-site to speak about SkillsUSA, career technical education and local job opportunities.

Sponsors include Fonco Fabrication, Farm Supply, B&B Steel, Gould Welding, Ian Tanner Fabrication, Coastal Pipe, Portney Construction, Taps Truck and Auto, and Robert Heely Construction.

Additionally in April, Cuesta College will be sending students to San Diego for the State Leadership and Skills Competition in automotive technology, collision repair, collision refinishing and commercial baking.
