Cuesta College student wins prestigious scholarship award

Cuesta College student, Associated Students of Cuesta College Vice President, and Alpha Gamma Sigma (AGS) Chapter President Nick Trujillo was recently awarded a $900 scholarship by AGS, the academic honor society and service organization of the California Community Colleges.

On Saturday, April 13, 2013, at the 87th Annual AGS Convention, Trujillo received the Charles Bell Award, which recognizes outstanding community service.

“This recognition is great for Cuesta College because it shows the local community that we have students who are not only achieving academically, but are going beyond that - doing volunteer work, serving the school and the community as well,” said Faculty Advisor Chris Gilbert.

AGS holds an annual convention each spring, at which the organization awards scholarships to students who excel in academics and/or community service. This year’s convention, held in Ontario, had 545 attendees representing 43 college chapters. At the award ceremony on Saturday, 49 student members of AGS were awarded scholarships totaling $36,500. The Charles Bell Award recognizes outstanding community service and is particularly prestigious as it is reserved for the service award nominees who received the highest scores from the judges. Of the 29 students who were nominated for service awards, only 19 were awarded scholarships; of them, only four received the Bell award.
