After a nation-wide search, Superintendent/President Gil Stork has selected Bakersfield resident Dr. Maria Escobedo as the finalist for the position of Dean of North County Campus and South County Center. She is currently serving as the assistant to the vice president of enrollment management at Cal State University Bakersfield.  Dr. Stork will recommend Dr. Escobedo be approved at the June 4, 2014, Board of Trustees meeting.

“Maria comes to us with a wealth of non-profit, community, and higher education leadership experience,” said Cuesta College Vice President of Student Services Sandee McLaughlin. “I look forward to working with her and to the knowledge and new perspective she will bring to Cuesta College.”

“My goal is apply what I have learned throughout my years in education about student recruitment, student services, programming, teaching, management,  and establishing partnerships, and  to make our students experience as seamless as possible as they move through their educational journey at Cuesta College,” said Dr. Escobedo. 

Dr. Escobedo has more than 17 years of experience with coordinating college student service programs and processes, and 20 years experience in grant writing. In her current position, she is responsible for the College Assistance/Migrant Education Program, an assessment fellow for Enrollment Management Division, the administrative lead for the University Tutoring Centers, and the administrative lead for the University Transfer Office. Dr. Escobedo holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from CSU Bakersfield, a Master’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Texas and an Ed.D in Educational Leadership from the University of the Pacific in Stockton.

Dr. Escobedo is expected to begin her appointment July 1, 2014.

Dr. Curtis is currently serving as chair of the biology/chemistry department at Purdue University North Central in West Lafayette, IN.  Dr. Stork will recommend Dr. Curtis be approved at the June 4, 2014, Board of Trustees meeting.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Curtis join academic affairs to serve as dean of sciences and mathematics,” said Dr. Deb Wulff, Cuesta College’s vice president of academic affairs. “His experience with institutional effectiveness, accreditation and dual enrollment will bring new insight to Cuesta.”

"I'm so excited to be returning to Cuesta College, and I look forward to helping the next generation of Cuesta students attain their personal goals,” said Dr. Curtis. “It will be my pleasure to have the opportunity to spread the hard work of everyone at Cuesta into the surrounding community."

Dr. Curtis graduated from Cuesta College in 1992, earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Biology from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, in 1993, and his Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Purdue University in 2001. In addition to serving as the biology and chemistry department chair since 2013, the Cuesta alum has served as a faculty representative on the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, an institutional effectiveness coordinator, and an associate professor at Purdue since 2000. He has also been awarded with Purdue’s 2013 Outstanding Faculty Teaching Award.

 Dr. Curtis is expected to begin his appointment July 1, 2014.
