F.A.Q.'S - (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q: What are the requirements to take the Work Experience class?
A: Maintain a minimum enrollment of 7 units (inclusive of Work Experience), be working at least 5 hours per week, and be concurrently employed for the entire semester.
Q: How many times can I take a Work Experience class?
A: You can repeat this class up to 16 units in your college career. Work Experience is offered at other colleges, so if you take it somewhere else, that counts toward your total Work Experience units.
Q: Can these units apply toward my Cuesta degree and are they
          transferable?
A: Yes. Work Experience can be used for elective units, both toward your degree and transferable to most C.S.U.'s.
Q: I'm a community volunteer. Can I take Work Experience?
A: Yes. You can be a paid or unpaid worker, volunteer, intern, as long as you adhere to the above requirements.
Q: Why is there a lecture and a lab offered under Work Experience?
A: Good question. You attend the lecture (9 hours actual class time), but you must also be registered in a lab. The lab represents the number of hours you work per week. This is not a separate class.
Q: What will I do in class?
A: You will develop objectives to improve your job performance. You will have lots of class interaction and learn more about the topics of communication, teambuilding, working with various personalities. You will receive helpful hints on interviewing and resume development.
Q: What if I'm self-employed?
A: That's fine. We will just need to verify your work with a responsible party.
Q: I have more than one job. Can I combine these to get the units I need?
A: You can combine your jobs. You will be required to verify all employment and create job objectives for both.
Q: How will I be graded? Is there a final? Are books required?
A: You will be assigned a letter grade by percentage points on attendance, learning objectives, and class summaries. There are two books: Communicating in the Workplace and Teambuilding & Problem Solving in the Workplace. There is No Final!
Q: How can I learn more about the Work Experience Program?
A: Look for the orientations, generally given during Assessment/Orientation/Registration (AOR) and Walk-In Registration times. Notices for these information sessions will be posted on campus, or you can phone the Cooperative Work Experience office at 546-3100, ext. 2522 (Darrylin) or 2509 (Linda).
