Summary
Student organization advisor roles seem to be determined for a given college and/or organization by the expectations of three key populations:
- Organization leaders and members
- Colleagues, peers, and other advisors
- The college
It is helpful to know what determines advising roles for each of these three populations. College expectations will influence the roles the advisor assumes. Less fixed, but also important, will be the perceptions of specific organization members and leaders, as well as of other organization advisors within the college.
These three influences also provide important methods of support for organization advising. The college can formalize support through both resources and recognition. Organization members and leaders have many opportunities to support their advisors. Other advisors can provide a support group for each other with respect to this role.
