Cuesta College Student Life & Leadership: Club Handbook

Can we have a raffle to raise money for our club?

Raffles

Donations, drawings, and sales of items such as T-shirts are limited to two weeks. Exceptions would be considered and approved by the coordinator/ASCC advisor.

In March 2000, the voters of the state of California passed Proposition 17 which allows raffles to be conducted by non-profit organizations to raise funds for charitable purposes with these provisions:

  • At least 90% of the gross receipts from the raffle must go directly to beneficial or charitable purposes in California, and
  • Any person who receives compensation in connection with the operation of a raffle must be an employee of the private non-profit organization that is conducting the raffle.

To be sure that your club is following California state law requirements, go to the Office of the Attorney General website.
