New students need to take an English as a Second Language (ESL) Assessment or complete the placement process in order to enroll in an ESL class.
Testing Calendar (Times shown are walk-in hours)
Cuesta College uses a computerized test called Accuplacer to administer the English as a Second Language (ESL) assessment. The test consists of two sections: Reading Skills and Language Use. The test is not timed, so you can take as long as you need. Most students will complete the test within 1.5 hours. If you are also taking the math assessment, allow for approximately 2.5 hours.
- Bring a photo ID
- Provide your Cuesta ID number
- A daily parking permit ($2) is required at the San Luis Obispo and North County Campuses during the Fall, Spring, and Summer sessions.
Students wishing to appeal their English as a Second Language placement results may do so by completing an appeal form and writing sample. The appeal form is to be brought to an assessment testing time. A writing sample will be completed during regular testing hours. The appeal form and writing sample will be reviewed by the English as a Second Language Division Chair. Please be prepared to spend approximately one hour when completing the writing sample.
