March 13: Email from the Superintendent / President
Dear Cuesta Community,
A Cuesta College faculty member has posted in Canvas that they were diagnosed with COVID-19. Please note, they do not reside in the United States. The post does not inform students that they are out of the San Luis Obispo area and has increased stress that some are experiencing.
The volume of calls and emails has increased significantly today, as has the desire for more action. I appreciate your efforts to provide reassurance to students and families expressing concern about coronavirus and ask that you share that the identified case of COVID-19 is not in San Luis Obispo County.
Below is the email update sent to students this morning. These will be made available on the COVID-19 website soon.
Dear Cuesta Student,
At this time, there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in San Luis Obispo County or at Cuesta College.
The well-being and safety of our campus community is our primary concern. Cuesta College is making the following changes to support national efforts to minimize the spread of coronavirus.
Cuesta College is open and classes are being held on campus.
Faculty who are prepared may begin providing instruction online via Canvas. Students will be notified by their instructors via Canvas and my.cuesta email of any changes to their courses.
Many faculty may choose to hold office hours online. Computers are available in the Library and Student Success Centers on the SLO and NCC campuses. The Student Success Centers are ready to assist those unfamiliar with Canvas.
Cuesta College is increasing the student support services available online including online appointments. The college is open and services are available to support your success during this transitional period. You are welcome to come in, call, or email. Contact information for Student Services is available here.
Students with accommodations are encouraged to communicate with their instructors and DSPS counselor for guidance and questions related to the online learning experience.
Under the guidance of San Luis Obispo County Public Health, CCCAA, and Governor Newsom, all large campus events and athletic competitions are cancelled. Immediate cancellations and postponements include:
- 37th Annual Jazz Festival & Concert – Mar. 13
- 42nd Cuesta Arena Swim & Dive Invitational – Mar. 13-14
- Cuesta Choirs Concert – Mar. 15
- County Band Festival – Mar. 18
- Women of Distinction Awards – Mar. 19
- Cuesta Wind Ensemble & SLO Wind Orchestra Concert – Mar. 21
- Preview Nights – Mar. 27 & Apr. 2
Information is changing quickly. We are in constant communication with the public health experts and are working to ensure our campus is aligned with their recommendations. Your patience is appreciated as we navigate this rapidly evolving challenge and strive to maintain our healthy campuses while supporting completion of your educational goals.
More change is likely to come. You are not alone, we are all in this together, and are encouraging flexibility as the term progresses.
Have questions? Please see our COVID-19 webpage, then give us a call.
