April 2: Email from the Superintendent / President
There are encouraging indicators in San Luis Obispo County that we are making progress in the effort to reduce the spread of disease. The local counts of positive cases are decreasing even as more surveillance testing is conducted and the beloved Farmers’ Market will return to downtown SLO on May 6 with modifications. Some Cuesta College employees have shared that they are now fully vaccinated while many others are just days away from their second dose. On my recent trips to the grocery store, I have seen more people safely interacting and less of the head down rapid rush through the store, or pandemic mode, that we all grew accustomed to.
We can see the light at the end of the tunnel and the weight is lifting from our shoulders, but it is imperative that we continue our safe practices. Masks, social distancing, and frequent handwashing remain key in safe reopening of our community. Masks are required on campus and we anticipate will still be required Fall 2021.
Commencement Thanks to the planning efforts of our flexible and dedicated Commencement Committee, Cuesta College will hold a drive thru commencement on May 21, 2021 beginning at 2pm. Want to join the fun and add your congratulations to our resilient graduates? Details and sign up are information will be emailed soon.
CCCAA Scholar Athletes At the CCCAA 24th Annual Convention on March 31, five Cuesta College 2019-20 athletic teams were recognized as California Community College Athletic Association Scholar Team Recipients. Congratulations to Men’s Water Polo, Women’s Swim & Dive, Women’s Track & Field, Men’s Swim & Dive, and Men’s Track & Field for your scholastic achievement!
Summer and Fall 2021 Summer 2021 college instruction and support services will continue operations as currently in place. Instruction will be primarily online with difficult to convert labs on campus, access to academic technology and support services will be available on campus in the SLO Library and NCC Campus Center. College for Kids will be on campus with modifications including outdoors. The Fall 2021 class schedule includes some lecture on campus. This shift will greatly increase our on-campus offerings from roughly 10% to near 50%. Planning continues for delivery of in-person student success and support programs, campus dining options, and room assignment to include two outdoor tent classrooms. Updates will be provided as fall planning continues.
Enjoy the Monday holiday and spring break!
