Read MANGA: Intro to Written Japanese
Through exposure to contemporary and classic Japanese manga and anime, students will
learn Japan's two phonetic alphabets (hiragana and katakana) and their pronunciation,
how to diagram a written Japanese sentence, as well as be introduced to the building
blocks of kanji. Regardless of past language experience, students will be taught translation
skills for enjoying Japanese manga (comics), basic Japanese grammar and vocabulary,
useful dictionary skills for future self-directed or classroom studies, the proper
technique for writing Japanese characters, and be introduced to preparation for the
JLPT 5 language proficiency exam.

Johnathan Lau holds a degree from the University of California in the history of Japanese art, with an emphasis on Japanese animation. He has lived in Japan, and traveled the length of the country researching Japan's pop culture. |
