The Essence of Storytelling
In our narrative class we will explore storytelling in its many forms, from myths
and mythic structure to novels and movies, songs and poetry and memoir. What is it
about story that is such a telling human compulsion, one that brings us together in
a vital, shared experience? What is common among all narratives, and what is unique
in the many species of stories we tell? Delving into such essential characteristics
as perspective, characterization, dialogue, and voice, to name a few, we will examine
the many ways to express and enhance the tales we tell.
In addition to readings and viewings about storytelling, this will be a workshop class,
where everyone is encouraged to bring what you are working on, even if it is only
in your head. Our supportive environment will help foster and enhance your own stories
in a portion of every class dedicated to each other’s work.
