Cuesta Soccer Lands Five on All WSC Teams

SAN LUIS OBISPO (December 15, 2017)- Cuesta Women’s Soccer landed five players on the 2017 All Western State Conference teams led by lone first team selection Kelly Poss (Redondo Beach). The Cougars opened the season with a solid 3-4-2 mark during their pre-conference schedule, but struggled against a Western State Conference circuit, which included two playoff teams.    The Cougars dropped their last nine games of the season, including all eight of their WSC contests, and finished the season in 5th place in the WSC with a 3-12-2 overall record.  Despite playing in the one of the State’s toughest conferences, the Cougars did have some bright spots in WSC play.  They equaled a season-high with a four-goal game against Oxnard and lost a one-goal game to the Condors in the second round.  Overall Cuesta was 0-6 against playoff teams and 3-6-2 against the rest of the field.  Five Cuesta players, including Poss, were accorded all-WSC honors.

Freshman Defender Kelly Poss (Redondo Beach) was named to the 2017 All Western State Conference First Team after also being named the team’s Most Valuable Player this season.  Poss controlled midfield for the Cougars and kept the Cougars offense moving forward and was also able to support the defensive end of the pitch.  She posted two assists during the season.

Freshman Defender Aundrea Mendoza (Paso Robles HS) and Sophomore Forward Chenin Dotson (SLO HS) were both named to the 2017 All-WSC Second Team.   Mendoza was the backbone of a Cuesta defense that played in front of three different goalkeepers over the season.  She also scored two assists on the offensive side of the pitch this season.  Doston recorded her only goal and only assist of the season in the Cougars’ first game, but was mainstay upfront and kept Cuesta’s offense moving.  She ended her Cuesta career with three goals and three assists.

Midfielders Rachel Foley (Atascadero HS) and Sydnie Esser (Paso Robles HS) were the Cougars’ leading scorers and were both accorded all-WSC Honorable Mention.  Foley led the Cougars with 22 total points on nine goals and four assists, which were all team highs for the year.  She scored four of the Cougars’ six goals in conference play and assisted on a fifth tally.  Esser scored four times in her first four collegiate games and ended the season with seven goals three assists for 17 points.
