Volleyball Lands Four Players on All-Conference Teams
SAN LUIS OBISPO (December 12, 2018)— It was a slow start for Women’s Volleyball in 2018, but the Cougars ended the year on roll with a three-game winning streak that put them in contention for a playoff berth. The Cougars ended the year with their third consecutive 3rd place finish in the Western State Conference (WSC) and, after starting the season 1-6, an 11-14 overall record. Cuesta’s strong finish and narrow miss of a playoff berth was recognized by the Western State Conference as four players earned all-WSC recognition; including first team selection Kaylie Griffin (Atascadero HS).
2018 All-WSC First Teamer Kaylie Griffin (Atascadero HS) improved all season along with her teammates and ended her sophomore campaign as one of the best Middle Blockers in the State. She was the Cougars’ kill leader in each of their last five matches and led the team with 250 kills on the season, which ranks 10th all time at Cuesta. She was also the team’s most efficient hitter and posted a team-best .326 hitting percentage, which is the highest mark by a Cuesta hitter in 15 seasons. However, Griffin was at her best on defense, where her 107 total blocks ranked 4th in the State and also tied Kayla Cribb’s decade old school record. She ends her Cuesta career ranked 2nd all time with 193 total blocks and 13th all time with 349 kills.
Sophomore Outside Hitter Hannah Katches (Paso Robles HS) was named to the 2018 All-WSC Second Team. She was second on the team with 202 kills and was the Cougars’ kill leader in ten games, including a team season-high 18 kills in a five-set match with Cosumnes River. On defense, Katches was 3rd on the team with 184 digs and added 18 total blocks. Her 316 career kills rank 15th all time at Cuesta.
Freshman Outside Hitter Savannah Bohna (Coarsegold) and Sophomore Setter SaVannah Spinharney (Templeton HS) were both accorded 2018 All-WSC Honorable Mention. Bohna was one of the Cougars’ best all around players this season. Her 145 kills landed right behind Griffin and Katches and she was second on the team with 199 digs. Spinharney set up the Cougars big hitters with 402 assists and landed a team-high 42 service aces, which is tied for 3rd all time. Her 58 career service aces represent the 7th highest total for the Cougars on record.
