Women's Water Polo Season Preview
Cuesta Women’s Polo Lands 7 on WSC Teams, Plus Two All State Picks
SAN LUIS OBISPO (December 20, 2017)- Cuesta Women’s Water Polo’s 2017 campaign ended in the second round of the CCCAA Regional Playoffs against the eventual CCCAA State Champion and the team’s success earned them plenty of post-season accolades. Cuesta finished the season in 3rd place in the Western State Conference, with an overall record of 23-13, and landed seven players on the All Western State Conference teams, led by All America selection Mia Viss (Modesto).
Two-time All Western State Conference First Team Goaltender Mia Viss (Modesto) enjoyed a dominant season as the best Goaltender in the State and concluded her Cuesta career as the program’s premier goaltender. She was accorded All-America honors and was named to the All State, All Region, and All Conference First Teams. Viss was able to take over games from the goal by both shutting down opponents and setting up her own team. She led the State and set school records with 375 saves and a 64% save percentage. She was at her best in the post-season and made 30 saves in the Cougars’ two playoff games. Viss added 42 steals, third on the team, to her efforts on defense and keyed the Cougars’ fast-break offense with her passes out of the goal. She was second on the team with 36 assists and led all goaltenders in the State. Viss holds nearly every goaltending record at Cuesta College.
Freshman Gabi Fabri (West Sacramento) was named to the 2017 All Western State Conference First Team and the CCCAA All-State Second Team. Fabri was an offensive powerhouse for the Cougars and almost impossible to stop with one defender. She led the Cougars with 95 goals, 4th best all time and just five short of the school record, and tied the school single-game scoring mark with 8 goals in the Cougars’ win over El Camino. A force at both ends of the tank, Fabri also led Cuesta with 53 steals.
2016 All-WSC Second Teamer Torie White (Los Osos: Morro Bay HS) joined Viss and Fabri on the 2017 All-WSC First Team. A renowned ballhawk, White led the Cougars with 43 assists, 4th all time at Cuesta, and was second on the team with 46 steals and 17 exclusions drawn, while also adding 40 goals. Her 90 career assists rank 2nd all time at Cuesta
2016 All-WSC Honorable Mention choice Shaine Sorensen (Solana Beach) and Freshman Sofia Terry (SLO HS) were both named to the 2017 All Western State Conference Second Team. Sorensen lit up the scoreboard from the outside with 65 goals. A Team Captain, her leadership in and out of the water was key to the team’s success. Sorensen’s 94 career goals rank #14 all time at Cuesta. Terry did all the dirty work for the Cougars. She drew a team-high 39 exclusions to set-up the power play and was the Cougars’ top one-one-one defender. She also tallied 24 goals and dished out 23 assists.
Freshmen Victoria Donis (Clovis) and Faith Archibald (Atascadero HS) were both accorded all-WSC Honorable Mention. Donis netted 33 goals and added 21 assists and 39 steals to the Cougars cause. Archibald missed the first three weeks of the season for medical reasons and had to play herself back into shape. She was back in form for the post-season and ended the year with 34 goals, 4th on the team.
