A long-standing program at Cuesta College is getting a facelift! Previously known as the “Reentry Program,” we are excited to announce the launching of our new “Compass" program. Initially, this program was designed to serve students 25 years and older and those who were returning to school after an absence of more than five years. Now, with the collaboration and support of several areas on campus, we have decided to re-invent this program to broaden our support in reaching a more diverse and inclusive student population.

“Compass” is a support program for students who need it. If you find yourself in need of connection, community and/or support; regardless of age, educational or socioeconomic background, we invite you to join us!

Many of our students are working, student-parents, self-supporting, supporting others and have many other responsibilities to juggle. It can be difficult to connect when you are running from class to work or to pick up your kids from school.

Our goal is to provide a space for students to share about their experiences and struggles as a college student. If you are looking for a welcoming environment where you can relate to others, meet those with similar interests and to offer mutual support, look no further.

Over the past 17 years I have taught English at Cuesta to all different types of students. If there is one group of students who consistently improves my classes through their commitment, humility, and varied experiences, it would be my reentry students.  Many of these students greatly underestimate their abilities, work extremely hard, and end up helping other students succeed.  I welcome all reentry students to Cuesta and want them to know how much we value their courage and hard work.  They really make Cuesta a “community” college.

My reentry students are a pleasure to teach.  They are engaged, enthusiastic and responsible.  They bring wisdom and life experience to our French classes.  They are great models for the younger students.
