Medical Assisting Student Requirements

The following information is provided to help students prepare for Medical Assisting requirements and expenses.  

All students must be age 18 at the start of class, with a photo ID, and proof of high school graduation or GED certificate.

Other requirements: It is important that students wait to receive instructions and forms at the first class meeting before proceeding with these requirements.  

Background Check and Drug Screen Policy (all programs)

Healthcare Provider CPR certification (all programs)

Current Standard First Aid Requirement:  Students must obtain standard first aid certification at their own cost. Standard First Aid certification can be completed through the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross. 

Uniform/Dress Code: Students typically purchase scrubs, lab coat, and shoes.  A wristwatch with sweep second hand is also required. Medical assisting students may not wear artificial nails or visible body piercing other than a limited number of earrings.

Skills Kit:
Purchased from the Cuesta College cashier’s office when registering for MAST 111/111L.  Students must provide the instructor with the receipt of purchase at the first class meeting to confirm. Skills kit supplies are provided during class as each skill is being learned. Once the course begins, the cost of the skills kit is nonrefundable. 

Cuesta College Student ID badge: the instructor will arrange an appointment with Public Safety for students to obtain their ID badges during MAST 111.
