John Divola is one of the most significant figures in the history of California photography. Over five decades, he has worked at the edge between the abstract and the specific, using the camera to probe questions of place, impermanence, and the nature of the photographic act itself. This solo exhibition centers on Enso: 36 Right-Handed Circumference Gestures, a series of 36 silver gelatin contact prints made in the abandoned housing tract of the former George Air Force Base in Victorville, California, in which Divola drew a circle in spray paint in a different room each morning, tracing the circumference of his own arm. At once an index of place, a record of time, and a trace of physical presence, the work asks what a photograph can hold and what it cannot.
