SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery at Cuesta College presents Not For Sale: Barter Exchange, a thought-provoking exhibition that challenges traditional ideas of value, ownership, and commerce by inviting artists and visitors to exchange artwork without the use of money.
Opening Friday, July 17, and on view through Friday, Aug. 28, the exhibition features works by California artists from the Central Coast, Los Angeles, and the Bay Area who explore alternatives to the conventional art market through the practice of barter.
Inspired by artist Ed Kienholz’s 1969 Watercolors exhibition, where each painting listed what the artist wanted in exchange rather than a purchase price, Not For Sale: Barter Exchange asks visitors to reconsider what gives artwork its value and how creative exchange can foster deeper human connection.
Each participating artist establishes their own barter terms by identifying what they would like to receive in exchange for their artwork – whether it's an object, a skill, a service, an experience, or something entirely unique. Those requests are displayed alongside each piece in the gallery. Visitors become active participants by accepting an artist’s terms, and the gallery facilitates the connection between both parties. Once the agreed-upon exchange is documented, both the artwork and the barter become part of the exhibition until it closes.
“This exhibition encourages viewers to think differently about the relationship between art and commerce,” said Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery Coordinator Tim Stark. “By replacing financial transactions with personal exchange, we’re inviting both artists and the community to participate in a dialogue about value, generosity, and collaboration.”
An opening reception will be held on Friday, July 17, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery on the Cuesta College San Luis Obispo Campus. Admission to both the exhibition and reception is free and open to the public.
The Harold J. Miossi Art Gallery at Cuesta College is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout the summer.
