Cuesta College is gearing up to hold its 22nd annual fundraiser for the school’s cross-country and track and field programs – the City to the Sea Half Marathon and 5K. The event is set for October 8; however, discounted early bird registration is now open through February 28. Registration is currently $30 for the 5K, and $70 for the half marathon. On March 1, prices increase by $5 for the 5K, $10 for the half marathon.

Proceeds from the race will fund a grandstand on the Cuesta College track and field facility. “Building permanent bleachers has been a dream for our students and faculty for years, and our goal now is to make it a reality,” said City to the Sea Race Director and retired Cuesta College Kinesiology Instructor Jani Johnson, who says the undertaking will cost approximately $300,000. “The facility serves not only the track and field program and its many young male and female runners, it also hosts the annual San Luis Obispo County Meet, the Regional Special Olympics, and other special events throughout the year.”

Participants of the half marathon will hit the pavement at 7:00 a.m. at Court and Higuera streets in downtown San Luis Obispo and end at Dinosaur Caves Park in Pismo Beach. Those running the 5K will begin at 7:30 a.m. and a Kids’ Fun Run will start at 8:30 a.m. – both will begin and end at Dinosaur Caves Park.

Since 1995, City to the Sea has been the premier fundraiser for the Cuesta College track and field and cross-country teams. The funds raised by the original event allowed the college to build the Fairbanks Cross Country course, enjoyed by the college and surrounding communities today. Each year, approximately 2,500 runners participate in City to the Sea.
