The ESL program integrates civics education and life skills with English Language instruction. While improving their English language skills, students also learn to navigate governmental, educational, and workplace systems and access important community institutions. Each semester, students complete EL Civics projects in their classes. Every year, one of these projects is connected to a larger campus wide event. ESL faculty and Continuing Education staff have been collaborating on ways to offer these events that build a stronger sense of community for ESL students.

The ESL program is collaborating with the Student Success Center to hold coffee breaks once a semester. The purpose is to have students mingle with students in other classes, learn about the Student Success Center resources, and integrate with the larger college community.
ESL students joined us for a night of learning about local health services, healthy living, diet and exercise. During the event ESL students completed their EL Civics portfolios with the help of Community Health Center (CHC) health educators, Cuesta College nursing students, and our support staff experts.
