Join us for the eleventh and final installation of our Laboratory Series, a conversation series with Black-identified artists in collaboration with R.A.C.E. Matters SLO.

On May 27 at 5 PM PST, we will be joined in conversation with Alisa Sikelianos-Carter, moderated by nicola lee.

Alisa Sikelianos-Carter is a mixed-media painter from upstate New York. She has been awarded residencies at The Millay Colony for the Arts, Vermont Studio Center, The Wassaic Project, Yaddo, NXTHVN, and the Fountainhead Residency (June 2021). Her upcoming exhibitions include group shows at James Cohan Gallery, New York, NY; Kavi Gupta Gallery, Chicago, IL and Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery, London, UK. She earned her BA and MA from SUNY Albany in Painting and Drawing.

nicola is a third-year sculpture graduate student at California State University Long Beach. Originally from Jamaica, she migrated to the US as an international student and pursued a BA in Business Administration International Trade at Florida Atlantic University. Local artists/professors who have influenced her work are Margaret Korishelli, David Prochaska, and Diana Puntar.

nicola's practice explores the intersections of oppression, inequality, justice, and value related to Critical Race Theory and Marxism. She uses various mediums like installation, video, language, sound, performance, and site-specificity to create a narrative. She employs signifiers, close-reading, and deconstruction as vehicles for questioning our Western capitalist society's social construct.
